Another Tsuki Kage Ryu karate retreat has come and gone. The view of the ocean on the drive down to Pescadero is breathtaking. The pies from Duarte's Tavern are delicious. Camp Loma Mar is peaceful. The only change this year is that now the old lodge where we have worked out for so many years has been condemned and is cordoned off with yellow tape. The new lodge is really just fine for karate practice ... even if it doesn't have that lovely nestled-in-the-trees feeling, it offers some significant benefits over the rustic old lodge. It is warmer, for one, and working out in the same location where the meals will be served means less hiking back and forth at mealtime.
Note of advice: bringing a 7-week-old to the karate retreat means you don't get as much of a workout as you did in the old days. However, I'll take what I can get! (No children were harmed in the filming of this retreat.) And, bringing along our own babysitter to occupy the 3-year-old is definitely still a great plan. Next year, the babysitter can take care of both kids and I'll get more of a workout again!
